Making Donovan's Birthday Cake
The 2 cakes:
First I traced the shape on the sheet cake I baked and then cut out the fish shape.
Then I moved the fish out of the pan onto a foil-lined cookie sheet because I didn't want to do that with a fully frosted cake.
Next I frosted the cake. I defined the fins and head with blue sugar.
I traced boundaries and little "scales" into the frosting with the knife to give the right texture.
I chose yellow and green for the stripes & used colored sugars to define them.
I then added lines to the fins, drew in eyes and a mouth.
Finally, I added kiwifruit and mandarin oranges for scales. For an extra special touch, I made blue & green Jello Jigglers in little circle shapes by molding them in a mini-muffin pan. They were "bubbles" around the fish.
Donovan's individual shark cake was a composite sculpture from the pieces cut away to make the fishy shape.
It took lots of work, but I was very pleased with the end results, and so were our guests.
Besides, it was fun, and I relished the creative outlet.
